ECB policymakers pledge market stability but see big growth hit
The European Central Bank is ready to preserve financial stability in case of further market turmoil but the sector, including hedge funds, appears well prepared for the recent rout, ECB policymakers said on Wednesday. Since U.S. President Donald Trump announced a raft of tariffs last week, stocks have fallen sharply, the dollar has weakened and U.S. Treasuries sold off overnight, raising fears of escalating market turmoil that could drag the world into a financial crisis. "The Bank of France and the European Central Bank are fully mobilised to ensure the (euro zone) economy is well financed and (ensure) financial stability," French Central Bank chief Francois Villeroy de Galhau said.
Should You Buy Bitcoin If There Is a Bear Market in Stocks?
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) is often grouped together with risk assets like growth stocks in the minds of careful investors. Under that logic, if there's a bear market for stocks, and the sentiment causes major players to flip to being risk-off from risk-on, Bitcoin is more likely to tumble than hold steady, just like other assets that are purchased for their upside potential rather than for their sturdiness. As you can see, Bitcoin lost a lot of its value throughout 2022, and then slowly started to grind up again in the following year.

This means that the fiat currency held by consumers, like dollars, have less purchasing power as a result of tariffs. Unless consumers can mitigate the decline in their purchasing power by holding an asset that retains its purchasing power in fiat currency, that is.

Drop in riskier emerging market bonds stokes concerns over market access
JOHANNESBURG/NAIROBI (Reuters) -International debt issued by small emerging economies generally viewed as riskier by investors suffered another sharp drop on Wednesday, raising concerns about the countries' ability to borrow in future as a growing trade war blasted U.S. markets. U.S. Treasuries, the bedrock of the global financial system and benchmark for emerging market bonds, were hit by fresh selling as President Donald Trump's eye-watering 104% tariffs on China took effect, and Beijing retaliated with 84% duties. Across emerging markets, longer-dated bonds issued by so-called frontier economies suffered some of the heftiest falls, with Pakistan's longer-dated dollar-denominated bonds dropping around 5 cents to be bid around the 70-cent threshold where debt is seen as distressed, Tradeweb data showed.
